April - Newsletter 21 (9th April 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the Summer Term. I hope you all had a lovely Easter. We look forward to a successful and happy term.

The table below gives you details of each class’ theme for this term. Knowing your child’s theme should help you talk to them about their work. Sometimes there is just one main theme for a term and sometimes two. The themes this term are:

Class

Theme

Reception

Pets  /  Water

1

Where in the World is Barnaby Bear? /  Growing

2

Plants and Animals

3

Map Detectives / Flying High

4

Zambia

5

A Comparison of Cheadle Hulme and Seaside Towns

6

Challenges / Rivers and Mountains

You have the details of your child’s curriculum in the ‘Booklet for Parents’ which you received with your child’s report (or in the Reception parent’s pack) – this is a useful reference throughout the year and will help you to help your child. There is also a link to this booklet through the website: www.laneend.stockport.sch.uk (Click on the ‘Our School’ – ‘Curriculum’ link and then choose the year group you want to look at).

Please also remember to have a regular look on the VLE for class and curriculum activities and support.

Clubs

Letters will be coming home about new clubs for the summer term this week. Junior Sports Stars Multi-Sports and Football, Gymnastics, Musicality Club, Tennis Club and French Club start as usual this week (French Club will be open to new members from next week and the club will also be open to Year 2 children this term). Dodgeball is also starting on Thursday (letters went home about this before the holidays but there is still time to join). There is a football match at Bradshaw Hall after school on Wednesday. The girls’ football tournament is being hosted at Lane End and takes place next Wednesday after school. Other clubs start next week or after and are detailed on the letter coming home.

Visitors from Zambia

Along with two other schools in Stockport, we have a British Council funded link with 3 schools in Zambia. 6 teachers from these schools will be coming to Stockport next week to visit and will be coming to Lane End on Thursday and the following Monday. They will be able to talk to the children about the similarities and differences between Zambia and British schools and life. If you look on the mosaic in the entrance hall you will notice that one of the greetings says ’Mwaiseni’ which means welcome in Bemba which is the most spoken indigenous language in Zambia.

Year 5 Scarborough Meeting –Mrs Love will be holding a meeting for parents about the forthcoming Year 5 Residential on Wed 17th April at 6pm.

Readathon Sponsor Money – please could sponsorship money and the sponsorship card be returned by Friday. Well done to all of the children who met their challenge and helped raise money for the charities which help seriously ill children. Thank you for your support with this and to everyone who has returned money already.

The Readathon was also part of our work on Reading for Pleasure. This excerpt is from the World Book Day and Readathon website: “Inspiring children to read is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. I’d recommend Readathon to anyone.” – Julia Donaldson, author and Children’s Laureate

Reading for pure enjoyment enriches children’s lives beyond measure – and it’s been proven that reading for pleasure is more important than wealth or social background in improving a child’s future socially, emotionally, academically and vocationally.

PTA

Family Fun Night next Friday (19th April) – we hope that you are able to make it, letter attached!

Next Meeting – this Wednesday (10th April) at 7:30pm, everyone welcome.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
