April - Newsletter 23 (25th April 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Sporting and Cultural Events

Our school teams have been involved in numerous events recently, including a win at the West Area Girls Football Tournament which we also hosted. The team played brilliantly beating Ladybarn School, Cheadle Hulme School, Cheadle Catholic Junior School, Greenbank School and Hursthead Junior School. Well done to the girls and a big thank you to Miss Rainey who runs the team and also organised the tournament this year.

The Football Team have also been playing in numerous matches including the Nevill Holt Tournament  and tonight are playing in the Futsal Tournament. Keep up the good work team and thank you to Mr Toyne who runs the football club and is racing around with you to the different matches!

Our Country Dancers performed very well at the Country Dance Festival at Stockport Town Hall this week. It’s an impressive event which the children thoroughly enjoyed. We had lots of support from parents too which was great – thank you. Thank you very much to Mrs Chamberlain and Mrs Lenaghan who run the Country Dancing Club.

It’s also been a very cultural time at Lane End over the last week. The Language People came into school to teach French to Years 2 – 6 around the theme of Spring.  They brought the Spring weather with them too (at least for a day or two!).

We were pleased to welcome the three headteachers from Kitwe in Zambia into school on Monday. They attended our assembly telling us about where they live and their schools. Following this they went on a trip to Bramhall Park with Year 4 (whose theme is Zambia this term) and then they had lunch with the children. They were able to spend the rest of the afternoon in each class talking about Zambia and answering the children’s questions. The headteachers have gone to Lyme Park today with staff from the three Stockport schools and the children who are members of our International School Council.

Our choir had its first session yesterday after school which was very successful. All of the children in the school are also taking part in singing lessons each week with Gill Henderson-Wilde, Stockport’s singing tutor.

Fencing Club has started and the children are lucky to be being taught by Robert Kiss, an experienced fencing coach who came 4th in the Atlanta Olympics!

Science club – we have had 19 responses which means that the club is able to go ahead and will start on 9th May (3:15-4:15pm). Mad Science can take up to 25 children so there’s still a bit of time to respond if your child is interested.

Walk to School Week

Next week is our walk to school week. Mr Vallance has held an assembly today explaining it to the children and a letter will be coming home tomorrow with a Walk to School Week passport attached for each child. We really hope that you will be able to join in – it’s healthy for the children and the environment! This year our walk to school week is being supported by Equity who have provided us with additional materials and a banner.

Before and After School Care

As parents who use Cheeky Monkeys already know, after numerous years of providing excellent before and after school care for some of the children at Lane End, Pauline at Cheeky Monkeys is moving in the summer. Unfortunately we don’t have the space to run a club on site (as the hall is used every day for our numerous extra-curricular clubs and the community room is regularly in use before and after school too) but I wanted to ensure that parents knew about the existing alternatives for before and after school care at Lane End and to let you know about another possible option.

Stay and Play (Before and After School Club based at the Methodist Church) – phone: 07947 777595

TLC Childcare (Tracey Shaw- local Childminder) – phone: 4853306 / 07946 357966, email: tlcchildcare@hotmail.co.uk

Tiny Toes (the Nursery on Mellor Road) – are interested in running a before and after school club and want to find out how much interest there is from parents. They have sent us a letter with reply slip which I have attached. If you might be interested in this option please reply by Friday 10th May.

The Childcare Development team have also put a message out to see if any other childminders in the vicinity would be interested in offering before and after school care for Lane End children.

PTA

We had a very successful Family Night last Friday – thank you to everyone who came and supported, we hope that you had a good time.

We’re getting closer to our PTA Summer Fair which is on Saturday 18th May from 12-3pm. We really hope that you will be able to make it as it is always a good event and one of our best fundraisers for school. We need more helpers, so if you are able to help, even if only for a short time then please get in touch – drop a note to the PTA into school with your contact details on or contact Bev Sangster (PTA Chair) on: 07967 823526 or email bev.sangster@ntlworld.com

Non-uniform days -  The children come to school in non-uniform with a donation for the fair as shown below. Thank you very much for your help with this.

Friday 3rd May – Please could children bring in Children’s Tombola Prizes

Friday 10th May – Bottle for the bottle tombola (unopened) – bubble bath, wine, olive oil, sauce etc.

Friday 17th May – Cakes (we had some beautiful homemade ones at Christmas!) or chocolate

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.
