April - Newsletter 17 (1st April 2016)

Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s been a very successful term with great learning going on in all classes and many creative and sporting opportunities, enriching experiences and highlights along the way.

Our choir sang beautifully at the Town Hall last night, performing their three songs in front of a large audience at the Stockport Choir Festival. A big thank you to Mrs Stutfield and Mrs Toyne for leading our choir and to all of the parents for their support in getting the children to events and coming to watch – it was an enjoyable evening and the children did very well indeed. They also sang ‘A Certain Kind of Imagination’ along with the other 6 school choirs who were at the festival – this is the Greater Manchester Hub Song and the lyrics are about the great industrial, engineering and scientific achievements in Greater Manchester past and present. All of our Junior children sang this as part of the Greater Manchester Hub singing challenge on 8th March and we were presented with this certificate:

You can see some videos of the choir singing on the VLE in the ‘Parents Zone’ section.

Our football team have performed extremely well – they won every one of their 8 games in our leg of the Stockport Cup without conceding a goal in normal match time (well done to Luke in goal!) and with every other player scoring at least one goal over the matches – Jacob was the top goal scorer with 11 goals and Jack not far behind with 8. The whole team worked very well together with great passing, attack and defence. This meant that they reached the grand final against Pownall Green Primary at Edgeley Park which was on Tuesday. Once again they played brilliantly, scoring three goals and having much of the possession for the first half of the game (goal scorers: Jacob, Harley and Emma). Pownall Green came back though and scored four goals in quick succession later on in the second half to leave them victorious in the end. It was a great game and nail biting stuff at the end! All of the team can be very proud of their achievement - to get to the last two teams out of the 40 in the tournament is superb. Year 5 and 6 came to watch (along with many parents and relatives of the team) and were enthusiastic supporters - they also did the school proud with their excellent attitude. A big thank you to Mr Toyne for running the football club and coaching the team as well as organising matches and entering us into competitions. The team all received medals which were presented by the manager of Stockport County First Team and the competition organisers commented on the fact that it was the best ever final they've had to the competition. Although obviously a bit disappointed not to win the final we can hold our heads high for the excellent sporting attitude, effort and skill shown by the entire team - well done all!

Football team: Jacob T, Emma S, Jack L, Luke G, George J, Harley F, Alex W, Alex M

There are some great photos taken by Mrs Rogers during the match on the school website. Here you’ll find some more information about our leg of the tournament which also involved our second team who played very well too – click on the link which is currently on the home page to view.

Explore Learning came into assembly on Wednesday to talk about a story writing competition which all of the children can take part in. Details and an entry form are coming home with your child and there is a fantastic first prize. It could be a fun and worthwhile activity over the two weeks holiday – if your child would like to take part they can either enter online or return their written story after the holidays (they will be collected on Thursday).

Our Year 2s had a musical afternoon on Wednesday when they performed at the Infant Music Festival – they did a great job representing the school. Our Year 1 children were also full of song in their brilliant assembly on Thursday which was a musical about Florence Nightingale filled with facts about the hero of the Crimean war and modern nursing.

A new club list will come home after the holidays – look out for our ‘Kids Kitchen’ cookery club run by Jo from ‘Beyond Baked Beans’ which will be starting for Years 1, 2 and 3. It will run on a Monday starting on 2nd May.

Well done to our Celebration Award Winners this term – these are the children who received the most entries in the Smiles and Good Work Book in their class over the term. They are pictured here:

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Have a lovely holiday everyone. The children are back in on Tuesday 19th April (as the Monday is an INSET day).

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
