February - Newsletter 16 (6th February 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Governing Body News - Ashley Elliott, who has been a Governor for 12 years and our Chair of Governors for the last 6 years has stepped down. We thank him for the excellent job he has done in this role and wish him all the best. Sue Hulme, who was previously vice-chair has stepped up to the role of chair and Jonny Downing is now vice-chair – this was voted for at the last full Governing Body meeting on January 23rd. There is a brief introductory message from both governors below:

Sue Hulme:

I am delighted and proud to have been elected your new Chair of Governors.

I have been on the Governing Body at Lane End since 1997 and both of my children have attended the school.  I am a qualified teacher; although I no longer teach. I do still work in the Education sector which gives me good insight into the internal workings of schools and the educational issues they face. You could say Education is my passion.

Lane End Primary School is an outstanding school in all areas according to OFSTED and the Governing Body are committed to ensuring this excellent school continues to raise attainment and remains outstanding. We have a dedicated team of teachers and support personnel in school who with the Head Teacher work tirelessly to ensure your children both enjoy their primary school years and attain their full potential.

Jonny Downing:

I'm really pleased to take up the role of vice chair.

I have two children at the school and a third to start in September '13. I've been a Community governor since 09/10, when the governing body was looking for financial skills: I'm an accountant by profession, and it's great to be able to make a valuable contribution in the school.

In that time I've challenged and supported James and his team through both the resources and curriculum committees. I'm looking forward to doing so in the role of vice chair as we work together to make Lane End a great place for our children to learn.

Parents’ Evening - Our Parents’ Evenings are on Monday 4th (Year 1 and 5), Tuesday 5th (Reception, Years 2, 3, 4 and 6) and Wednesday 6th (all classes) of March. A sign-up sheet will be available from 8am on Thursday 21st February – you’ll also be able to phone from this time if you can’t make it in to school. We’d really like to see all parents at our Parents’ Evening.

Reading for Pleasure - We’re all really enjoying using the new library and Junior Librarian website. There are some great photos of our ‘Reading for Pleasure’ work in the ‘School Events’ section of the website including some photos of our visit from Tommy Donbavand. Don’t forget about dressing up for World Book Day on Thursday 7th March (see the last newsletter – all newsletters are available on the school website).

PTA Meeting tonight (Wednesday 6th) at 7:30pm – everyone welcome.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

We’ve had a lovely half term and break up after school on Friday 8th February. The children are back in school on Monday 18th February.

Yours sincerely,

 James Twigg
