February - Newsletter 17 (19th February 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have an exciting half term planned with lots of events for the children to get involved in and be inspired by. Events planned include: World Book Day, iSing week and concert, Science and Engineering Week and an author visit from Steve Hartley. A list of useful dates and school events for the half term is below:

  • Monday 4th – Thursday 7th March – iSing pop (children learn the songs and do their recordings in school)
  • Week commencing 4th March – Parents evenings (please make an appointment by coming into school or phoning if you are unable to come into school from 8am this Thursday)
  • Thursday 7th March - World Book Day (children can dress up as a favourite book character or, if they prefer, be ’Socktastic’ and be creative with their socks as one of the books we will be looking at is ‘Socks‘ by Nick Sharratt and Elizabeth Lindsay. We will also be sending home information about our sponsored Readathon soon).
  • Thursday 14th March – iSing Pop rehearsal at church in the afternoon (we will all walk down to the church to rehearse). iSing Pop concert at the church from 6pm – all of the children are involved and need to be at the church for 5:45pm. Information about ordering tickets is coming home soon.
  • Friday 15th March – Steve Hartley (author) in school. It is also Red Nose Day - children can wear something funny for money (£1 donation to Comic Relief) – it could be their World Book Day outfit, their red nose, their pyjamas etc. etc.  PTA Red Nose Day Disco – details in the attached PTA newsletter.
  • Week commencing 18th March – Science and Engineering week – we will be carrying out interesting science and engineering investigations and activities culminating with a competition for the children on Friday afternoon.

Please also see the attached PTA newsletter for more information about PTA events.

We’d really like to see all parents so please sign up for a slot by coming in to school on Thursday this week (21st February) or phoning (from 8am if you are unable to come into school). Thank you.

Robinwood The Year 6 children had a great time on their activity centre residential to Robinwood in Alston, Cumbria. They worked brilliantly as a team andreceived fantastic feedback from the Robinwood staff who kept on commenting on what a polite and well behaved group they were. Well done Year 6!

Football Clubs – for children who have signed up, a quick reminder that Miss Rainey’s and Mr Toyne’s football clubs start this week. Miss Rainey’s Girls Football club is on Tuesday and Mr Toyne’s Football club is on Wednesday.

Year 2 Sats Meeting – a reminder for Year 2 parents that this meeting is on Wednesday 27th February at 6pm.

PTA Newsletter

Dear Parents & Carers,

Christmas Fair Update

Firstly a MASSIVE THANKYOU to John Paddock, who managed to secure a donation from Barclays Bank of £750 to add to our already fantastic total of £2800 from the Christmas Fair. This has been used to purchase the new Junior Librarian Software, which the children have been making great use of in our new Library. If you’ve not seen it yet there are pictures on the website or you can have a look at the Red Nose Day Disco.

New Projects

We are purchasing new staging to add to the existing so the children can be tiered at the sides and seen better during productions and assemblies. We are also looking into improving the sound and lighting as well.

The next big project is to install trim trail equipment on the school fields, this will be a mixture of equipment for all the children. We are trying to get outside funding for this but if not will fund ourselves.

Family Fun Night – Friday 19th April

Get those little grey cells working for our family fun night. We’ll have a quiz, observation round, bingo, games and much more with prizes for each round. Make up a team of 8 before the night or arrange on the night. Refreshments will be available to buy on the night. Tickets £2 for adults and £1 for children. More info nearer the time.

Summer Fair – Saturday 18th May 12-3pm

We’ve ordered the sunshine and started with our plans for this year’s fair. If you would like to pick which stall you can help out on, the rota will be available at the Red Nose Day Disco. Non-uniform days start on Friday 3rd May. More details to follow.

Summer Ball – Saturday 29th June

Get your dancing shoes ready for the Summer Ball. Enjoy a 3 course meal and

dancing to the early hours and all within walking distance home. Tickets are £30 and

on sale in May.

Picnic – Friday 19th July

Fingers crossed for no rain this year! Bring your own picnic or buy food from the outside stalls and enjoy the last event of the school year.

Want to get involved with any of the upcoming events?

We’re introducing a new point of contact for each year group, so if you have any questions, queries or suggestions on the PTA or our activities please speak to your contact – more details soon.

Did you know we’re on Facebook? Search  “Lane End Primary School PTA & Friends” and select the JOIN GROUP option. This has details of all our upcoming events and photos of previous events.

Want to learn how to face paint?

We’re looking for volunteers to learn how to face paint. We’ve lost a number of parents recently who could do this and we were struggling for volunteers at the Christmas fair. We are looking to do an informal training session one Sunday afternoon, please fill in the slip below and we’ll arrange a date.
