January - Newsletter 13 (8th January 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.

We look forward to an enjoyable and rewarding 2013.

Curriculum

We aim to plan an exciting and stimulating curriculum for your children with a lot of the work linking together in topics or themes. This makes the learning more meaningful for your children as they can make links between subjects. You have the details of your child’s curriculum in the ‘Booklet for Parents’ which you received at the beginning of the school year (or in the reception parents’ pack) – this is a useful reference throughout the year and will help you to help your child. There is also a link to this booklet through the website: www.laneend.stockport.sch.uk. Knowing your child’s theme should help you talk to them about their work. Sometimes there is just one main theme for a term and sometimes more. The themes for this term are listed below:

Class

                    Theme/s

Reception

Teddies and Toys

1

Homes and Materials

2

Superheroes

Where did the Victorians go on holiday?

3

Keeping Healthy

Weather Around the World

4

Energy and the Environment

5

The Romans (Invaders and Settlers)

6

Rights and Responsibilities

Thank you for supporting your child at home, it really does make a tremendous difference to their education. Children should be reading each night and completing their homework on time. Please also remember to regularly log on to our VLE and the web-based learning tools we subscribe to such as ‘Mathletics’, and ‘Espresso’ to get the most out of the online learning available to your child.

Clubs

The following clubs start this week as children have already signed up for them: Junior Sports Stars (Multi-sports and Football), Gym, Tennis and French (country dance starts next week). There will be an opportunity to join some of these clubs and other clubs for this term when we send the club information letter and reply slips home later this week.

New Developments

Our lovely new library was installed over the holidays – it looks fantastic and is a great environment for the children to choose their books in and be inspired to enjoy their reading.  We will be re-stocking the shelves this week and the children should be able to use it very soon. We will also send home details of our new online library facility once it is up and running. All of this was only possible because of the fundraising of the PTA and support of parents for PTA events – thank you again! Thank you as well to Mr Rhodes for his excellent decorating skills.

We have also installed a new storage shed for the Reception play area (it’s just being finished this week) which will mean that the Reception children can make even better use of their outside space.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
