January - Newsletter 13 (9th January 2017)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas.

We look forward to an enjoyable and rewarding 2017.

Curriculum - We aim to plan an exciting and stimulating curriculum for your children with a lot of the work linking together in topics or themes. This makes the learning more meaningful for your children as they can make links between subjects. Knowing your child’s theme should help you talk to them about their work. Sometimes there is just one main theme for a term and sometimes more. The themes for this term are listed below.

There is a link to more detailed information about each year group’s curriculum on our website in the ‘Our School’ – ‘Curriculum’ section. An overview of the curriculum for your child’s class for this term will also come home soon.

Thank you for supporting your child at home, it really does make a tremendous difference to their education. Children should be reading each night and completing their homework to a good standard (trying their hardest) and on time. Please also remember you can log on to our VLE to use the web-based learning tools we subscribe to such as ‘Espresso’ to get the most out of the online learning available to your child. You can also gain an insight into what your child is doing at school on Seesaw. The children still have their targets to work on – these are stuck into their homework book. Please look at these with your child at home and you can stick any work they do related to their target in the back of their homework book to share with their teacher.

Clubs - A letter about clubs for the term will be coming home this week. Clubs on after school this week are: Junior Sports Stars (multi-sports - Tuesday and football - Thursday), Choir (Tuesday), Gymnastics (Wednesday), 50th Anniversary Sewing Club on Wednesday (second group – the children in this group had a letter before Christmas) and Tennis (Friday). We will let the children know about the lunchtime clubs in school.

NSPCC – the NSPCC will be in school delivering their Speak Out, Stay Safe programme in separate infant and junior assemblies on Tuesday 17th January as well as delivering workshops in Years 5 and 6. The objectives of the programme are: To ensure primary school aged children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. To ensure primary school aged children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. To make them aware of how to get help and sources of help including Childline.

The NSPCC are also coming in to hold a meeting for parents/carers on online safety. This will be held at 6pm – 7pm on Wednesday 25th January in school. Please do come if you are available – there is more information below.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg

NSPCC – Keep your child safe online

Dear Parents/Carers,

Will you join us and help keep all children safe online?

O2 and the NSPCC have joined forces in a mission to help all children and their families in the UK stay safe online.

Online safety workshops for parents/carers

We will be hosting our free online safety workshop for parents at Lane End Primary at 6.00pm on Wednesday 25th January 2017 and would like to invite all parents to join us for this informative event. Please note this is for parents/carers only and not for children to attend.

The hour-long workshop is a great opportunity to gain skills and knowledge to understand the internet and technology as children do – from online games and cyber bullying, through to setting up privacy settings and controls - and to help you have the right conversations with your children.

We do hope that you will be able to attend.

Many thanks

Helen Redman
