June - Newsletter 21 (9th June 2015)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the second half of the summer term. We have a rewarding and enjoyable half term in store with a great deal planned to help inspire more fantastic learning for the children.

Our Zambian Visitors – 3 teachers from our partner schools in Zambia are visiting during the week commencing 22nd June. They will be in school on Monday 22nd and Thursday 25th June as well as visiting the other two Stockport schools in our ‘Connecting Classrooms’ link. Our International School Council met to help pose some questions which the teachers will be able to answer as part of an assembly on the Monday. The teachers will also be able to see some of our Junior Sports Day, visit each class and help us with our Zambian wildlife sculpture for the garden which will involve all of the children. They will also be able to see our sponsored skip on Thursday morning (more about this later!). It promises to be a rewarding week and give our children further insight into life in Zambia and another culture in our wide world.

Sculpture Competition – The children also have the opportunity to win a visit to Knowsley Safari Park by entering our wildlife sculpture competition and creating a sculpture of a British or Zambian native animal (Zambian animals include – crocodile, hippo, eagle, leopard). Miss Rainey is sending home a letter with more details and entries need to be in by Friday 19th June – good luck!

Sports Days – you are warmly invited to come and watch your child at our sports day. Please keep your fingers crossed for good weather as they are weather dependent (we will always text you if we are unfortunately unable to go ahead due to bad weather/field conditions). As our Zambian visitors will be here for our Junior Sports Day (and will have just left before our Infant Sports Day) we are having a Zambian twist to them this year. We will be incorporating some of the sports and races that Miss Rainey saw the Zambian children take part in during her visit. Please could your children wear a t-shirt which reflects their team colour (green, red, blue or yellow) if you have one available.

Junior Sports Day – Monday 22nd June starting at 9:30am.

Infant Sports Day - Monday 29th June starting at 9:30am.

P.E. Kit – Please could I also ask that all children wear a white t-shirt for their P.E. lessons. Most children do (thank you for your help with this) and it creates a much smarter impression if all children have the right kit. Thank you.

As the week commencing 22nd June is also National School Sports Week Miss Rainey and Miss Leach have organised a sponsored skipping event on Thursday 25th June. Children across Stockport are being encouraged to skip more and we are kicking this off by raising money for The British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK – these are charities which the children have asked if we can support. A sponsor form and details will come home soon. Please support these very worthwhile charities by helping your child get as many sponsors as possible – thank you.

Summer Fair Thanks – a big thank you to the PTA and everyone who supported our Summer Fair. It was a lovely event and raised a fantastic £2300. Well done all.

Trim trail - We now have enough money to install our trim trail/adventure play area and it is planned to go in over the summer holidays. Our Pupil Forum have given input in the final design and it looks like it should be a fantastic resource for all of the children. We are able to afford a temporary safety flooring for under the trim trail which will do the job for up to two years but we would prefer to install an artificial grass safety flooring which would last the lifetime of the equipment. This would be possible with some more funding and we could potentially receive a community award to do this – however, it requires people to vote for our project. If you go to this website https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/lane-end-primary-school/ , register and then vote for our trim trail project it would be very helpful and could secure us the funding we need. Voting ends at midday on 29th June so please vote now! If you go on to the website you’ll also see an initial image of the trim trail – this newsletter is available on our website (in the newsletters section) so it may be easier to click on the above link from there. Thank you!

Sporting Success – our fantastic year of sport continues and just before the holiday we saw success for our cricket teams and girls football team as well as a good performance by our Year 3 tennis players. The girls cricket team are through to the borough finals and the boys narrowly missed out on a direct place but are keeping their fingers crossed for best runner-up. The girls football team played brilliantly and came second out of the twelve teams in the Girls Football World Cup.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
