March - Newsletter 20 (20th March 2013)

 Dear Parents/Carers,

We’ve had an exciting, fun and rewarding term! Thank you for all of your support.

It’s been a very busy term with many exciting opportunities for the children. As well as all of the hard work they do in class each day and all of the class trips, assemblies, class events and extra-curricular activities that have happened this term, the children have taken part in a whole host of different whole school events including the Tommy Donbavand visit, iSing Pop, World Book Day, Red Nose Day, the Steve Hartley visit and we’re now in the middle of Science and Engineering Week!

Science and Engineering Week – Move It!

Science and Engineering week started with a bang when Mr Vallance launched a rocket on the school field! We’re learning all about movement and each class has been challenged to design and make air powered dragsters to race - investigating how to make them go faster. The children are experiencing a range of investigations and science demonstrations and are showing a real enthusiasm for the week. We also have a Zumba teacher in school who is working with each class and really getting them to ‘Move it!’ Thank you to Mr Vallance who is leading the week.

iSing Pop

Thank you for all of the positive feedback we’ve had about iSing Pop – it really was a very special event and I’m very pleased so many of you enjoyed the concert at the church so much. The children did brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Once we have the photos and video back from the iSing Pop team we will see what we’re able to put on to the VLE and website for you to see. Thank you again to everyone who was involved.

J, our fantastic iSing Pop tutor, really enjoyed his time at Lane End too, saying, "After an initial 30 seconds of 'shyness,' the children of Lane End joyfully entered into the spirit of our iSing POP project, and immediately made me feel at home. It's rare to find such a welcoming atmosphere on the very first morning, with staff and students engaging so naturally with each other and with their guests. I thoroughly enjoyed singing, eating and chatting with the kids throughout our week and look forward to returning in the future with new songs."

We’d love to have iSing Pop back sometime and in the meantime we are capitalising on the children’s enthusiasm for singing with Jill Henderson-Wilde, Stockport Music Service’s ‘Vocal Animateur’ (singing teacher), who will be coming in each Tuesday next term to work with each class. We also have some more exciting musical news coming to you after the Easter holidays, including a new Lane End Primary School Choir, a chance for the children who are learning a musical instrument to play with the Hallé orchestra and the start of a Year 5 band!

Comic Relief – we raised an amazing £564 for Comic Relief from the Red Nose Day Disco and donations for ‘Wear Something Funny for Money’. Thank you so much for your excellent support for these events. It was a great day to have Steve Hartley in too as he gave such a funny assembly about his books to the whole school and the children really enjoyed working with him throughout the day.

Readathon – We hope that your children are enjoying reading to meet their Readathon challenge - the challenge finishes at the end of this week but there’s time over the holidays if they need to catch up! Please could all sponsor money be returned to school by Friday 12th April.

Photos and Videos

Please could we ask for your help. I just wanted to clarify that whilst parents/relatives can take photos and videos of school events, this is on the understanding that these are for families to view at home. Could we please ask for you not to put photos of school events/trips etc. onto Facebook, Youtube or other public internet sites. We certainly don’t want to stop parents/relatives from taking photos and videos of school events as we know these are precious memories (although some schools have gone down this route) so we just ask that you don’t publish them online as this is not something that other parents have agreed to - some parents may be uncomfortable with or have good reasons why they don’t want their child’s photo sharing more widely. As a school we have sought permission for using photos and try and share a good range of photographs of school experiences with you via the school website and VLE – so hopefully you can get a good view of all that is going on in school! We certainly can’t police this but thank you in anticipation of your understanding and help.

Upcoming assemblies: Year 6 on Thursday 18th April at 10:10am, Year 2 on Wednesday 24th April at 10:10am.

Year 5 Scarborough Meeting – Mrs Love will be holding a meeting for parents about the forthcoming Year 5 Residential on Wed 17th April at 6pm.

Ordering School uniform from Zenith Children’s Wear – please find attached an order form for school uniform from Zenith Children’s Wear. If you would like to order uniform from Zenith please return the form ASAP (orders are collected at the end of each month).

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

We break up for the Easter holidays after school on Friday (22nd March) and the children are due back in school on Monday 8th April. Have a lovely Easter everyone!

Yours sincerely,
