May - Newsletter 24 (2nd May 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Walk to School Week

We have had a great response to our Walk to School Week – well done everyone!   We’ve had some lovely weather for it too. I hope it has inspired some of you to keep walking to school after this week. Any child who has a stamped passport will receive a badge tomorrow. Any child who has all of their days stamped will also be entered into our prize draw. Please remember passports tomorrow. Thank you to Mr Vallance for organising the week and to our Year 4 and Year 6 Passport Control Officers!

A Winning Streak - Well done to our football team who won the Futsal Tournament last week! Our second major tournament win of this half term after the recent Girls’ Football Tournament. Well done Lane End!

Parent Governor – we had one nomination for our Parent Governor position. Thank you very much to Carla Seed who will be starting the role this term.

PTA Summer Fair - Saturday 18th May from 12-3pm

We are looking forward to the fair which promises to be a fun community event which raises money for the school and projects such as our planned ‘trim trail’. We really need more helpers to make the fair a success though. So if you are able to help, even if only for a short time then please get in touch – drop a note to the PTA into school with your contact details on or contact Bev Sangster (PTA Chair) on: 07967 823526 or email  bev.sangster@ntlworld.com  Thank you!

Tomorrow (Friday 3rd May) is our first non-uniform day for the fair.  The children can come to school in non-uniform with a donation for the Children’s Tombola. Thank you very much for your help with this.

3 non-uniform days as shown:

Friday 3rd May – Please could children bring in Children’s Tombola Prizes

Friday 10th May Bottle for the Bottle Tombola (unopened) – bubble bath, wine, olive oil, sauce etc.

Friday 17th May – Cakes or chocolate. We will also link this with a local non-uniform day for ‘Millie’s Trust’ – Millie’s Trust supports and promotes Paediatric First Aid awareness and any donations will be gratefully received.

Thank you as well for your help in selling raffle tickets. We have some great prizes so far and there will be even more to come: £100 Cash, PTA Hamper, Hot Air Balloon Ride, Family Tour voucher for Manchester City, 2 tickets for Gullivers World, Wristband Voucher for Blackpool Pleasure Beach, 4 tickets for Legoland Discovery Centre, 2 Family Vouchers for Aerial Extreme, a Garden Firebowl, a ticket for Rope Race Activity Centre, Free Youth Membership for Bramhall Park Tennis Club and many more!

An inspiring story from one of our ex-pupils, Melissa Ahmed, who has decided to help raise money for Lane End Primary School in her own time. Melissa is now a student at Salford University studying Aeronautical Engineering and is raising the money by volunteering - babysitting, cleaning, working in a shop, gardening etc. She is helping to raise money for a set of stage lights for school as the productions were always a highlight for her. Her next fundraising idea is to organise a bag pack at a local supermarket. Thank you Melissa!

Growth Mindset - Just a reminder that we are continuing to help the children to develop their ‘Growth Mindset’ in school. There is a section on the VLE which gives parents information on the difference between a Fixed and Growth Mindset and resources to help – go to the Parents and Whole School section of the VLE and have a look at the Challenge Zone too.

Science Club – there was an error on one of the dates on the Mad Science letter as one of the dates fell in the half term holiday. The club starts next week on Thursday as advertised and all of the session dates are as follows: 9th May, 16th May, 23rd May, 13th June, 20th June, 27th June, 11th July, 18th July. The club will be held in the Year 4 classroom.

Class Photos – The children’s class photos will be taken next Wednesday (8th May) – please make sure that your children wear full school  uniform – thank you.

Bank Holiday – don’t forget that Monday 6th May is the May Day Bank Holiday so there will be no school next Monday.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
