May - Newsletter 20 (12th May 2015)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our Summer Fair is this Saturday from 12-3pm and promises to be a fun family afternoon as always. The aim is two-fold: a fun community event and celebration and a great way to raise money for the PTA.

We now have plans in for our trim trail/adventure play area and will be able to install this over the summer with one last push of funds. Our Pupil Forum will be meeting soon to help finalise the plans.

We do need more helpers and there is a sign-up sheet in the school entrance – thank you to everyone who has signed up so far. Alternatively you can contact Bev Sangster the PTA chair on: 07967 823526 or bev.sangster@ntlworld.com. Volunteers are needed to deliver flyers, help with prep on Thursday morning & setting up Friday afternoon and manning the stalls on Saturday.

Please could all remaining raffle ticket money and stubs be returned to school by Thursday along with any unsold tickets – thank you very much for your help selling tickets. There are some great raffle prizes as always too!

It is the last non-uniform day on Friday – please could children bring in cakes or chocolate or something for a hamper – thank you very much.

We have some exciting new games and stalls at the fair this year including a fun Minion treasure hunt. If you have any empty kitchen roll tubes please could you send them into school tomorrow as they will be useful for this game!

Finally any entries for the miniature garden competition can be brought to school this week or brought to the fair (by 1pm).

There will be lots to do, see and buy at the fair including games, tombolas, the school choir, our country dancers, crafts, stalls and refreshments. Please do come along to support the school and enjoy the fair – we’d love to see everyone there.

Zambian Teachers Visiting – Teachers from our three Zambian partner schools will be visiting us in June (w/c 22nd June) and we will be finding out more about life in Zambia and its history and culture. We also have an exciting art project for the whole school to take part in that week. Mrs Rogers (who currently has one of her pictures up in a gallery in London in the final of the Wildlife Artist of the Year competition) will be leading the children in the creation of a wildlife sculpture for the garden which will emphasise our links with Zambia and our school values. Miss Rainey is also organising a competition linking to this and our International School Council (Year 5 and 6 from our Pupil Forum) will be meeting with representatives from St Simons and St Peters schools in Stockport to help plan the visit.

Skip 4 Life – the week of 22nd June is also National School Sports Week and Miss Rainey is organising a sponsored skipping event – more information will come home nearer the time.

Staff News – we have appointed a new caretaker, Mr John Power, who will be starting with us after the May half term holiday. Mr Power is a retired police officer who has also run his own painting and decorating firm and been a governor in his children’s school – so he bring a wealth of experience and skills with him to the role. I’d also like to say thank you to Mr Morley, who is currently working as our temporary caretaker, for all of his hard work during his time with us.

It’s an exciting week next week for our Year 4 and 5 children who are going to Stockport Plaza on Monday for the final of the ‘Book Factor Awards’. Year 1 also have a treat in store as they have been chosen to be the audience for an episode of the Cbeebies show ‘Swashbuckle’ and will be going to Media City in Salford on Thursday.

Good luck to our Year 6 children who have their SATs this week and are showing a great attitude. SATs are just one part of Year 6 and the children experience a broad, challenging and exciting curriculum, develop in many other ways and learn skills and knowledge which are not part of the tests. However we always want our children to be prepared and do their best, facing each challenge with a growth mindset which is exactly what we have seen so far this week - well done and keep going!

We break up for the half term holidays on Friday 22nd May and the children are due back in on Tuesday 9th June as the Monday is an INSET day.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
