May - Newsletter 20 (12th May 2016)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Next week is our ‘Best of British’ week which will be a fun week of learning about Britain past and present. It will also involve some whole school British sporting events so please can children have their P.E. in all week including trainers for outdoor sports. It is always useful to apply long-lasting suncream before your children come to school and provide a named cap or sun hat for when the weather is sunny – which we really hope it will be! On Friday afternoon we will be having our British street party/picnic. We will provide the food for this and just ask if you could donate £1 per child to fund this – thank you (children can bring it to school next Friday). If you have a picnic blanket you would be happy for your child to bring in to school please could they also bring it in next Friday as it will add to the occasion (named if possible please). If children would like to play their musical instrument during the street party/picnic for the other children then they can bring their instrument and a prepared piece of music to play. Because of activities during Best of British Week clashing with Year 3’s Forest School session we are rescheduling the Year 3 session for 20th June – there’s too much exciting learning to fit in!

I will ‘tweet’ each day to let you know what the children have been up to during our Best of British Week and will also put a page showing photos from the events on the website by the end of the week. We have 55 Twitter followers so far (thank you!). To make the page easier to access, there is now a link to our twitter page on the school website – you can click on it and see what has been happening even if you don’t have a Twitter account. It would be great if all parents/carers had seen the site. Although it is primarily a way for us to show you more about what is happening in school, please do feel free to give us a like or quick comment to say well done to the children and each class as you see what they’ve been doing.

I wanted to say how proud we are of our Year 6 children – they have shown a great attitude all year and this has been very noticeable this week as they have taken their SATs tests. They have been calm, collected and helpful in school and done the tests with exactly the attitude we would hope for – working hard but keeping it in perspective. Well done to the staff too who, despite what has sometimes seemed like the government’s best efforts to create chaos around the tests this year with constant updates, changes and mistakes,  have also been calm and collected and helped the children to have the best week they could. We don’t stop the wider curriculum and the Year 6 children have also been showing their creative flair and sporting prowess. They have been working on their Mayan Art projects this week and you can see this work and some of their recent literacy work around the fantastic book ‘The Arrival’ on our Twitter page!

The PTA Summer Fair - Saturday 21st May, 12-3pm

Please remember to sell your raffle tickets and sign up to help with the fair if you can (there is a reply slip in with your raffle tickets and a sign up board in the school entrance). Thank you to everyone who has signed up to help so far – it is greatly appreciated.

A reminder about our non-uniform days: the children can come to school in their own clothes in exchange for:-

Tomorrow (Friday 13th May) - Any unopened bottle (Sauce, bubble bath, wine etc)

Friday 20th May - Cakes or chocolates. We are hoping to do an afternoon tea so if you are baking, scones, mini cakes or cupcakes would be lovely. Children can wear red, white and/or blue as it will be our ‘Best of British’ theme week.

Don’t forget about the competitions – Best of British bunting competition for children (entries in by next Wednesday) and Best of British cake competition for adults (entries in on the day of the fair). There is also the children’s fancy dress competition on the day of the fair. All judged by the Mayor of Stockport with some great prizes. There will also be a ‘busking stage’ available for any children who have an instrument to play, song to sing, trick to perform etc. – children will be able to sign up for a slot when they arrive at the fair.

It should be another fantastic PTA Fair with lots going on – we have great raffle prize, super stalls, fun games, fab food, entertainment, competitions and more – please do come along and enjoy the fair whilst supporting school.

Class photos – these will be taken on Wednesday 25th May. Please send your children in to school in school uniform. We have had the new group style of class photos for a while now which many of you like but are going to try the class in rows style again this year for a change and because we know there are also parents who prefer this style – please let us know how what you think of the photo, thank you.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
