November - Newsletter 7 (17th November 2014)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Well done to our Cross Country team who excelled themselves on Wednesday last week. Mr Ward organised a cross country race against other schools at Lane End and it went extremely well. The boys came first overall and the girls came second. This is an amazing achievement especially considering that we have only been going with the club for just over a year now. When you watch the children at training on a Friday after school you can see why they are doing so well – there is a great determination and team spirit from all of the children. Well done all and a big thank you to Mr Ward and all of the parents too for your support.

Isabel from Year 6 and Jason from Year 5 were two of the 60 singers from Stockport Junior Voices who had the opportunity of a lifetime on 11th November 2014, when they travelled to London to take part in the Schools’ Prom at the Royal Albert Hall. They joined a 550 strong choir, made up of young singers from the Greater Manchester Music Hub, to perform a specially commissioned work by Ed Puddick with the GM Jazz Orchestra. The lyrics were taken from “Secret Music” a poem by War poet Siegfried Sassoon. They were given a standing ovation by the 5000 strong audience and the concert finished in usual Proms style, with a vigorous rendition of Edward Elgar’s ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and the children sang their hearts out once again. Well done to Isabel and Jason.

Stockport Music Service runs Junior Voices and a variety of different musical groups which your children can get involved in. Phone 0161 483 7636 for more information.

Our choir with Mrs Stutfield is going from strength to strength and will be singing at St George’s Church on Tuesday 2nd December at the Stockport Christmas Choir Festival and on Sunday 7th December at Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church’s Community Carol Concert.

We talked about Remembrance Day in assembly last week and held a two minute silence. Our Year 6 children also took part in a memorial service at The United Reform Church on Swan Lane.

Luka, Hannah, Oscar and Millie from Year 6 also took part in the first round of The National Young Mathematicians Award last week against four other Stockport schools. They had to complete a high level, multi-layered problem working as a team and performed very well indeed. We haven’t got the results back yet, however whatever the outcome they did the school proud with their excellent attitude, mathematical thinking and team work.

Christmas Productions

Infant Nativity – ‘The Grumpy Sheep’ – Monday 8th December at 2pm and Wednesday 10th December at 6:30pm. A letter will be coming home to infant parents this week with details about our Infant Nativity and a slip to return with payment for tickets. The children are already enjoying learning the songs and it promises to be a great show.

Junior Carol Concert – Thursday 11th December – 7pm. Tickets aren’t required for this but there will be a collection for charity at the end. We do ask that there are no more than four people per family watching as the church can get very full indeed. More details will come home soon.

Road Safety Week and Competition - Look out for each other!

Being selfish on and around roads can lead to tragedy, so the theme for this year’s Road Safety Week (17-23 November) is ‘Look out for each other’. It’s all about consideration: car drivers are being urged to slow down, and pedestrians and cyclists are being encouraged never to take chances and to make sure they can easily be seen.

We are teaming up with the Brain Injury Group (BIG) to promote road safety, and inviting our children to get creative – and competitive - either by designing a cycle helmet or by colouring and making up a block-figure - wearing a cycle helmet, of course! The competition will be judged by a member of our staff together with Mr Bellfield from Thorneycroft Solicitors, a member of BIG, and prizes are being provided for KS1 and KS2 by BIG (including Halfords Vouchers and Road Safety Gear). Competition sheets have been put in each class for children to take home.

The children can work on their entries at home and the closing date for entries is Monday 1st December.

This week is also national Anti-bullying week. The theme is ‘Let’s Stop Bullying For All’ - we have spoken about anti-bullying in assembly and each class is doing work on anti-bullying and producing a class charter to make sure we all say no to bullying together.

PTA Christmas Fair, Saturday 29th November from 12 to 3pm – sign-up sheets for helpers are available in the school entrance. Please do put your name down to help – we’re in need of as many volunteers as possible to help the fair to go well. Thank you! Non-uniform day on Friday this week for bottles for the bottle tombola. Thank you for your help.

The children are decorating Christmas mugs this year ably assisted by Mrs Wilson (and her extended family!) who have kindly come in to school today and tomorrow to work with each class. They are looking great so far and we hope you’ll be at the fair to buy your child’s mug and help raise much needed funding for school.

The whole school will be walking down to Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church on Thursday 27th November to watch the Rhema Theatre Company’s production of the Nativity. We saw one of their productions at the church a few years ago and the children really enjoyed it so it should be another good show.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
