November - Newsletter 7 (24th November 2015)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Winter is certainly here. Please make sure your children have warm coats, gloves, hats etc. when it is cold. It’s important to label all items of clothing too – thank you.

The PTA Christmas Fair is on Saturday 28th November from 12 – 3pm. We really hope you will all be there and please do also help out if you can. A sign-up sheet is up in the school entrance. Helpers will be entered into a raffle for a bottle of champagne! You can still take part in the PTA 20/20 club for a chance to win £100, £50 or £20 each term – letters are also in the school entrance.

Thank you for your help selling raffle tickets – please return all money and stubs along with any unsold tickets before Friday. We have some fantastic prizes and along with the first prize of £100 we also have a Christmas hamper and vouchers, gifts and tickets kindly donated from: Modiste, Life Leisure, Chads Theatre, The Retreat Rooms, Pimlotts, Wild Things, Little Bug Heads, Junior Sports Stars, A Sweet Thought, The Board, Wetherspoons, Simply Books, Monkhouses, Shots, Salon 51, Chapel Holistics, Hudsons, Whittaker’s, Rainbow 88, Aroi, The John Millington, Trattoria D'Agostino, Explore Learning, The Chiverton Tap and Victoria at Home.

Thank you as well for the support of the non-uniform days. It is the last one on Friday and children should bring in cakes, chocolates or a prize for a hamper.

The Christmas Fair promises to be a lovely family event and raises much needed funds for school through the PTA.

Thank you to Mrs Wilson and extended family who came in last week to help all of the children (a group at a time!) with their Christmas baubles. Each child has made a bauble which will be on sale at the Christmas Fair for £2.50 (there is a discount if you have more than one child and so need to buy more than one bauble – baubles are named so you’ll know which to buy!) They have done a great job and look very festive.

iSingPop Whole School Christmas Concert – Thursday 10th December at 2pm and 6pm - a letter is attached with information about the concert and a slip to request tickets. We are not charging for tickets but will have a collection at the end of the performance. The money raised will go to Millie’s Trust and to pay for a defibrillator which will be kept in school and which staff will have training on how to use. The concert should be a wonderful Christmas celebration bringing the whole school community together. Our tutor, Claire Bramwell, is in school with us next week and the children will also be recording a Christmas CD of the songs which will be available for you to purchase. Performances - On 10th December we will need to return to school after the afternoon performance with all of the children so they can be collected as normal from school. For the evening performance children should arrive at 5:40pm at the church in their school uniform – you will then be able to take them straight home from the church.

Year 2 Nativity – One Bright Star – Wednesday 9th December - a letter is also coming home to Year 2 parents so you can order your tickets for our Year 2 nativity. Please join us from 2pm for mince pies and a hot drink before the performance starts at 2:30pm.

Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church Crib Festival – the Methodist Church are holding a crib festival next week displaying nativities made by a variety of people and settings. Our Reception and Year 6 classes are busy making our contributions and each class in school will have a chance to walk down to the church next week to see the range of nativities on display and to hear more about the nativity from Mrs Coe at the church. There is also an open morning on Saturday 5th December for the public to view the nativities and the Methodist Church extends a warm invitation to you all.

Choir – our choir will be singing at Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church’s Christmas Carol Concert on Sunday 6th December. The concert starts at 6:30pm and the whole community are invited. They will also be singing at St George’s Church on Tuesday 8th December. Choir members have all had information about the concerts sent home.

Christmas Music Concert – all of our instrumentalists (guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone) will be performing at 6pm on Tuesday December 16th. We should be able to accommodate all parents/relatives who want to come so there is no need for tickets. Please can children arrive at school by 5:40pm in their school uniform ready to set up and start at 6pm.

Year 5’s class assembly is on Thursday (26th November) at 9:20am. We are also holding a PTA coffee morning in the community room from 9am on this day (all welcome) and you’ll also be able to help do some wrapping for the Christmas Fair if you’re able to come along earlier!

Cross Country – We held an excellent cross country event at school with 6 different school taking part. Our girls came third overall and the boys fourth – well done all and a particular mention to Emma Sangster who came second out of all of the girls and Dylan Gouldson who came in the top 10 for the boys.

Last Friday was the last cross country club session until after Christmas (a change from the date previously advertised). We will start again after Christmas and details of the start date will come home with the club letter at the beginning of term.

Our Year 6 children did a great job of representing the school at the United Reform Church’s Remembrance Day service. Lilly played the Last Post on her bugle and all of the children had a chance to speak to veterans after the service. The Year 6 children had written poems about war which were displayed at the church.

It is Road Safety Week and we spoke about ‘The Green Cross Code’ in assembly today. All children will be receiving a copy of ‘Tales of the Road – a Highway Code for Young Road Users’ and a reflective tag this week. Please look at the book with your child. The deadline for our road safety week competition is next Monday - we’ve had some great ideas for interesting, environmentally friendly ways of travelling to school so far with some great safety features on show too.

Well done to Daisy, Ben, Amelia and Jason, our Year 6 maths team, who performed brilliantly at the National Young Mathematicians’ Award maths competition at Explore Learning. They worked well as a team to carry out some high level maths problem solving and won their heat against Cheadle Hulme School, Moss Hey Primary School and Meadowbank Primary School. They are through to the next round which is taking place on Wednesday – good luck!

Our Book Fair was a great success – thank you to everyone who bought a book and helped contribute to the amazing total of £1200. School receives 60% of this amount to spend on books for the library and classes – a brilliant early Christmas present! Thank you to the children from the Pupil Forum and all the other children who helped and were such good sales people, to the parents who came to help run the stall and to Mr Toyne for organising it all.

Children in Need – our coin picture of Pudsey worked really well and raised £207.42 for Children in Need. Thank you for all of the contributions.

School Christmas Dinner – Tuesday 8th December – children who already have a school dinner will receive this automatically but it is also available for all children who normally have a packed lunch. A menu is on the reverse and a slip to return with £2.30 (exact change please or a cheque payable to SMBC Lane End Primary School) is below. Please return this by 30th November. All children can bring a Christmas cracker to have with their dinner at on 8th December to add to the festive occasion!

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
