October - Newsletter 4 (2nd October 2012)

Dear Parents/Carers,

School Photos – the photographers will be in tomorrow (Wednesday 3rd) taking individual photos of the children. Please send your child in full school uniform. Thank you.

Harvest – thank you very much for the superb support for our Harvest collection for the Wellspring kitchen and well done to the Year 3’s for their lovely Harvest assembly. Some volunteers from the Wellspring Kitchen are coming this week to collect the food. Well done to our Young Entrepreneurs from last year who will also be presenting the Wellspring Kitchen with a cheque for £96.15 which are their profits from their Marvellous Mini-Market.

Children’s Charity Sale

During our assemblies about Harvest we spoke to the children about how important sharing was and how charities helped to share amongst those who needed it most. We talked about charity events school has had in the past and how well supported they were. We also discussed how it would be good for the children to think for themselves about charities they would like to support and ways that they could do that.

During the  breaktime after the assembly, I was happily inundated with ideas for different sales or events from children from across the school!   We’d like to harness the children’s enthusiasm and good spirit for this and give individual children or groups of children a chance to raise money for a charity of their choosing. After discussing this in assembly, we’ve decided to have some charity sales during Golden Time on the first three Fridays after the half term holidays. Each group or individual who wants to take part will need to complete an application form (which I will give to class teachers this week) which will say which charity they are supporting, where the money will go to and what they are going to do at the sale. Once these have been collected we will give each group one of the Fridays to hold their sale on (so they will only need to do it once!).

The children who are taking part can do a short presentation in assembly on the week of their sale to say what their charity is and what they will be selling (cakes, secondhand children’s books, something they have made etc.). They can also put two adverts up in school during that week and are welcome to bring decorations/posters and a pricelist for their table on the day.   We really appreciate your support with this and hope that it will give all of the children a fuller understanding about raising money for charity; a greater understanding of some different charities and what they do and a desire to help others – the enthusiastic and thoughtful response so far has been very heart-warming.

Rotary Presentation – thank you to the Cheadle and District Rotary Club who, after enjoying a visit to the school, chose Lane End as the school they wanted to receive their donation of 32 Osbourne Illustrated Children’s dictionaries. These were presented to us in assembly after a presentation from the Rotary about their charity work – again fuelling our enthusiasm to help others!

Reception Reading Meeting – a reminder that this meeting for Reception parents is at 6:30pm tonight (Tuesday 2nd October) in the school hall – we hope to see you there.
