October - Newsletter 5 (17th October 2012)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Secondary School Admissions

A quick reminder to our Year 6 parents that the deadline for secondary school admission applications is 31st October 2012. You can apply online and there is a link to the council admission site from our school website – go to ‘Links’ and then click on admissions. If you have any questions please do get in touch.

New Look Website

Our website has a fresh new look and I hope that you will find it even more user friendly. If you have the website in your ‘favourites’ (which is a must!) then you may need to type ‘Lane End Primary School’ into Google (or another search engine) and access the website and then save it as a favourite again – otherwise you may continue to get the old website as it is stored in your computer’s cache.

VLE – many children are now using the VLE and there is a lot on there for parents too. Click on the ‘Parents and Whole School’ section for a wide variey of Literacy and maths resources and go to your child’s class section to see what is available there.

School Photos – We had a few children in Class 1 who missed their individual photo, only having a photo taken with their sibling – the photographer is coming back on Thursday 18th to do individual photos for these children (sorry about the mix-up). If your child missed their photo because they were off school that day and you’d like their photo taking whilst the photographer is in then please email Mrs Titterington at admin@laneend.stockport.sch.uk The photographer will only be here for a short while so she will only be able to take photos of children who missed it last time. Thank you.

Reading Books

We are reorganising how the reading scheme books are colour-coded to create more bands and allow for better coding of new books. We want to start by auditing and  re-coding all existing reading books from our colour-coded bands (not the library books). For this reason, please could all reading books be returned by Monday 23rd October. We hope to have the system organised for when the children return after the holidays. We will give you a parents’ guide to the new system – but the main differences you should notice are that the colour bands have changed and that your child has more newer looking reading books as we further update our stock and take out some of the older more dated books.  Please do continue hearing your child reading each day as that practice makes such a difference to their ability. Although the children will be without their reading book for a short period it should be worth it for the gains made from the new system. Children will still have their library book to read as well as books from home, and we’d really recommend a trip to Cheadle Hulme library at the weekend or during half term too.

Cheadle Hulme Library – each year the library hold a reading event during the sumer holidays and our children have always been keen participants. We had a large number of children who completed the scheme this year and they were presented with certificates in assembly from the librarians. Well done to all of the children who took part! We really want to encourage a lifelong love of reading and the library is such a worthwhile place to visit – a choice of books to borrow for free, fantastic!

Sickness

If your child has been sick or had diarrhoea we ask you to keep them off school for 48 hours after the symptoms have finished so as to avoid spreading the illness. Thank you for your help with this.

Children’s Charity Sale

We have had a huge response to our Children’s Charity Sale idea with many children wanting to take part and thinking hard about which charity they will be supporting and what they will be selling. Every child who sent back their application form willl get a slip home on Friday telling them what date their sale will be on (we’ll do a slip for each child in the group with a reminder of who they are supporting and what they said they wanted to  sell) – the sales will be on Friday 9th November, Friday 16th November and Friday 23rd November and each group will be given one of these dates. I’m sure that parents will be involved to a greater or lesser extent at some point if not already and so I also thank you for your support – it’s great to see how enthusiastic our children are about helping others!

PTA Quiz Night (this Friday 19th October from 7:30pm) – If you haven’t  got your tickets yet, there’s still time and we’d love to see you there! Please send £2.50 per ticket in a named envelope marked Quiz Night ASAP!

Football Clubs

Our football teams have all been performing well and had some excellent practices and matches against other schools this half term, including a win against St Thomas’ in the cup. Mr Toyne’s club are also playing Hursthead away after school today (Wednesday) – good luck team! A reminder that Mr Toyne’s and Miss Rainey’s clubs will be finishing at the half term holidays for a winter break until February (although Mr Toyne’s team will play their cup game when it comes up). Mr Toyne’s club have a match next week on Thursday at home against Cheadle Primary (instead of training on Wednesday) and Miss Rainey’s Girls Football team have  a football tournament at Werneth Primary on Thursday 25th October instead of training on Tuesday.

We break up for half term after school on Friday 26th October and the children are back in school on Tuesday 6th November as the Monday is an INSET day.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
