September - Newsletter 3 (26th September 2013)

Dear Parents/Carers,

MacMillan Coffee Morning tomorrow - Friday 27th September from 9am in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support in the Community Room. Come along for a chat and some tea, coffee and a delicious cake. If you have any cakes you could bring to donate that would also be fantastic! Please come in on the morning through the Community Room door (just off the infant playground next to the reception class) anytime from 9am until 10:30am. We really hope that you can pop in.

PTA Quiz Night – Friday 11th October at 7:30pm - Only £3 per ticket – all proceeds to the PTA fundraising for school. We really hope you can make this fun night – a letter is attached with a reply slip (parents/adults). We are promised some exciting new rounds this year too!

Visit to ZambiaMr Vallance is travelling to Zambia on Friday for a week to visit our partner schools and we wish him a good journey. We have used one of the new ipads to video messages and questions from our children and also to answer some of the Zambian children’s questions which they sent us in their letters. Mr Vallance hopes to show them to the school children in Zambia and record some responses to show our children.

Stranger Danger

I have been talking to the children about stranger-danger in assembly and how to keep themselves safe. There are lots of useful resources on the internet to help you talk to your children about this important topic at home too. This link to mumsnet has some useful information and links to other useful sites:

http://www.netmums.com/lifestyle/house-and-home/essential-safety-for-kids/essential-safety-for-kids-stranger-danger  (this newsletter is available on our website and you can click on the link to go to the site!)

I have also been talking to the children about online safety – the link above will also take you to resources to talk about this at home. I also really recommend the CEOP site (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)and there is a link to this on our VLE along with other internet safety tips – the links are on the VLE under learn about esafety. Everyone should now have received their VLE booklet with passwords etc.

These topics are covered in our ongoing work in school but we also have specific assemblies on the issues as we have in the last two weeks. The Reception children have covered this in class with Mrs Toyne as they start assemblies after half term. The messages are always important but particularly pertinent at the moment as I know there have been a couple of incidents in the Greater Manchester area recently.

School Photograph  - the children’s individual school photos will be taken on  Wednesday 2nd October. Please make sure that your child is wearing full school uniform. Siblings will be taken together and also separately so you have more choices.

Meal Vote – the children have been voting for their favourite school dinner and the winner is: Pizza with croquets and spaghetti hoops followed by ice-cream and fruit (we had to add that last bit!). Mrs Harper will be cooking this meal on Thursday 10th October and we are inviting all the children to have a school dinner that day if they would like to. Another option of jacket potatoes will also be provided and the salad bar is open every day. If your child normally has a packed lunch but would like a school dinner on 10th October instead please fill in the slip attached to this newsletter and return with £2.05 (cash or cheque to SMBC please) by Wednesday 2nd October at the latest so we can order the food. If your child already has a school dinner there is no need to reply. Thank you.

Harvest Assembly – Our Harvest Assembly is on Thursday 17th October. It will be performed by Year 4 and the Year 4 parents/relatives will be able to attend (unfortunately we don’t have space for everyone else). We are collecting for The Wellspring Kitchen again this year who support homeless people in Stockport. Their harvest wish list of different food types etc is attached.  Please bring in the gifts for Harvest from Friday 11th October – thank you.

Walk to School Fortnight – this we be held from 4th November and more information about how you and your child can get involved will be available closer to the time.

Parking - Walking to school or parking further away from school is always a good idea and very helpful to ease the congestion on Ramillies Avenue and the parking problems on nearby streets. We have had complaints recently from residents on Newhaven Drive about inconsiderate parking. Please do park respectfully without blocking our neighbours’ drives or double parking.  Please also be very aware of your speed as you come down Ramillies Avenue and do not park on the zig-zag yellow lines outside school – the children’s safety has to be the priority. Thank you.

Smiles and Good Work Stickers Competition – I was very impressed with the quality and quantity of entries to the competition – thank you to everyone who took part, you all got a team point for taking the time to enter! There were so many to choose from that we have decided to produce a range of stickers so that the children have a choice when they win one. Well done to these children whose designs will be used for the stickers: Kate Raistrick, Scarlett Hansen, Marcus Cobley, Lianna Patel, Harry Mather, Ayla Maydanchi, Emma Lynch, Katie Wright, Owen Shaw, Ava Mitten, Mia Forshaw, Ben Daly, Sophie Webster, Jonah Russon, Maisie Oman, Jayden Seabright, Adam Seed and Katie James. You can see some of the fantastic designs below:
