Everybody Writes - Space Junk!

We held an  'Everybody Writes Week' with an exciting stimulus to get all of the children involved.

We pretended that some 'space junk' landed in the school field. It had been cordened off and was there to see as children and parents arrived at school. Each class went out to examine it and try and decide what had happened. After that, we had an assembly to talk about it. During the assembly, a message was brought in that had been found amongst the space junk. This is what it said:

Greetings Earthlings!

We come in peace. We are from the outer quadrant of your Galaxy. Our leaders sent us on a mission to find out about your planet.

Unfortunately we had a problem with our spacecraft last night. Please look after our Booster Unit. We are orbiting the Earth while we repair the damage. We need your help to complete our mission and get home safely. Here is a list of questions for you to answer.

What do young Earthlings like to play with?

Where do Earthlings live?

What is the climate like on Earth?

What kind of stories do Earthlings tell?

What is the Earthlings' diet?

What kind of transport do Earthlings have?

What do Earthlings do in their spare time?

What types of organisms inhabit Earth?

Is Earth a safe place for us to settle?

Our SuperScanners allow us to watch your progress. Please do your best to help us. We will contact you soon.

XXXarg and  KKKlog

We wanted to help XXXarg and KKKlog and went back to class to think about the questions they had asked. We also had lots of questions of our own!

Although the children were all told that this was a set-up scenerio, they played along really well and really enjoyed it. We had visits from witnesses and scientists and a few surprises during the week. The idea behind the Everybody Writes Week is to inspire some fantastic writing across the whole school and for the children to use a range of genres including: newspaper reports, explanations, instructions and poetry. We are aiming to use some of the writing to produce a small book.

At the end of the week we held a balloon release so that each child could send a message up into space!

The chronological recount below shows you the story of the whole week.

It's been out of this world!

On Wednesday XXXarg and KKKlog sent us a message telling us how well we were doing answerering their questions. They said that they were looking forward to receiving the messages on the balloons on Friday! Click on the link to hear what they said:   XXXarg_sends_greetings.mp3
