Harvest 2009

The children have been growing vegetables in the garden and October was the time to harvest them. We harvested carrots, onions, leeks, corn, pumpkins, beans and courgettes (the cabbage and cauliflower are still growing and the potatoes were harvested a while ago!).

The vegetables were made into a Harvest Soup and cooked by our school cook Mrs Harper. All of the children got the chance to taste our Lane End Organic Veg in the soup. It went down very well (with most of the children!) and was a great way for all of the children to see the growing process through to the end. We also managed to sell all of the remaining vegetables and will use the money to start growing again for next year.

Year 2 performed our harvest assembly this year and were watched by the rest of the school and their parents. Thank you to everyone who brought in tins and packets of food - these have gone to Life Share, a charity which distributes them to homeless people in Manchester.

Year 2 told us about harvest around the world and in different cultures. They explained how lucky we were to have all the food that we needed to stay healthy. We also heard the story of 'Little Red Hen' which taught us the importance of sharing.

Reverend Newton also talked about sharing at the end of the assembly and how important it was not to be selfish.

It was a very interesting Harvest Assembly. The Year 2's and Mrs Chamberlain made us think about how lucky we are and how we can help others. They also all spoke very clearly and sang their harvest song beautifully.
