Mark Hunter MP visits Lane End - October 09

Representatives from Lane End Pupil Forum met with M ark Hunter MP before school this morning, Friday 9th October 2009. They had previously written to him about the traffic problems outside school at the beginning and end of the school day. Mr Hunter listened to the children’s accounts of what school had done to address the problems, including their successful ‘Walk on Wednesdays’ initiative and promised to follow up their concerns with the local council. The children then accompanied Mr Hunter outside to observe the congestion and parking problems, and to look at possible solutions.

Chris Toyne, Acting Deputy at Lane End Primary said, “The children enjoyed meeting with and speaking to their MP, and were able to put across the views of the school’s pupils clearly and concisely.”

Daniel, a member of the school’s Pupil Forum, said, “The speed limit on Ramillies Avenue is 20 mph, but cars often break this limit.”

Luke, another representative, said, “We need a proper crossing place for the children that walk, and more space for parents dropping their children off by car.”

The children then reported back to the rest of the school in assembly, and are hoping that the meeting leads to the roads around school becoming a safer environment for them.

LATEST NEWS: Mark Hunter MP informed Stockport Council Road Safety Department about his visit. We were contacted by Road Safety Officer, Dave Whitfield, who then came to meet the Pupil Forum to discuss the issue further. The Pupil Forum explained what they felt needed to be done to make Ramillies Avenue safer for children.

Mr Whitfield then organised for a traffic survey to take place on Ramillies Avenue. Let's hope that we see some action after that! We will post more information as soon as we have it!
