November 2012 - Charity Month

November 2012 turned into the month for supporting charity at Lane End with Children in Need, Children's Charity Sales, Movember and Wear Pink. Find out more below:

Children's Charity Sales

During our assemblies about Harvest we spoke to the children about how important sharing was and how charities helped to share amongst those who needed it most. We talked about charity events school has had in the past and how well supported they were. We also discussed how it would be good for the children to think for themselves about charities they would like to support and ways that they could do that.

During the  breaktime after the assembly, we were happily inundated with ideas for different sales or events from children from across the school!   We harnessed the children’s enthusiasm and good spirit for this and gave individual children or groups of children a chance to raise money for a charity of their choosing. After discussing this in assembly, we decided to have some charity sales during Golden Time on the first three Fridays after the half term holidays. Each group or individual who wanted to take part completed an application form which said which charity they were supporting, where the money would go to and what they were going to do at the sale.

The children who were taking part also did a short presentation in assembly on the week of their sale to say what their charity was and what they would be selling (cakes, secondhand children’s books, something they have made etc.). The children put adverts up in school during that week and brought in decorations/posters and a pricelist for their table on the day.   The stalls looked amazing and all of the children had put in a great deal of effort to raise money for their charity.

As well as raising money for many different charities, the children gained a fuller understanding about why we raise money for charity; a greater understanding of some different charities and what they do and a desire to help others – the enthusiastic and thoughtful response was very heart-warming. Thank you to all of the parents for their excellent support too.

The Children’s Charity Sales raised an amazing total of  £515.22 and supported the following
charities chosen by the children: Cancer Research, RSPCA, Protect our Puffins,
Dogs Trust, MS Society, Children in Need, Oxfam, Seashell Trust, NSPCC,
Princess of Wales Hospital, Whizz Kidz, Guide Dogs, MacMillan Cancer Support,
Doostan, Beachwood Cancer Support, World Wildlife Fund, Red Cross, Valley
School, Help for Heroes, McDonalds Hospital Charity and the Alzheimers Society.

Children in Need

We also had a fun day celebrating Children in Need and 'Going Pyjamas'. Our inter-class competition to build the biggest tower of coins raised an amazing £200.68 and the PTA Children in Need Disco raised a fantastic £351.40 giving us a grand total of £552.08! Well done everybody.

Movember and Wear Pink on 30th November!

Finally, after a month of hard moustache growing Mr Toyne, Mr Vallance, Mr Rhodes and Mr Twigg were joined by a lot of the children who sported moustaches or wore pink to raise awareness of and money for men's and women's cancer. Our charity efforts were inspired by the children's sales and we raised £224 for the charities. Thank you for your support!
