Visitors in Assemblies - Summer 2011

We regularly invite visitors into school to talk to the children in assembly. This gives the children a broader experience and understanding of the world. A few highlights from this term so far include:

NSPCC – Helen Redman from the NSPCC came to talk to the children about the work of the NSPCC (in separate infant and junior assemblies) and the sponsored ‘Big Workout’ the children are taking part in. Each class will take part in a sponsored workout circuit before the 18th July. We will let you know when they have completed it.  If you would like to support this good cause, please ensure that the form and sponsor money are returned to school by Monday 18th July 2011. Thank you.

Deaf Awareness – Thank you to Vicki Hempstock, parent of one of our Reception children, who organised for Dorothy Croston from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf to come and talk to the children about deafness, how to recognise a Hearing Dog, how the dogs are trained and to answer the children’s questions. The children got so much out of the assembly that Dorothy came back again with Senti, a hearing dog, and owner Joan for another assembly. Vicki has also shared her sign language expertise with the Reception and KS1 children in their classes.

Bible Encounters – Peter Fraser from ‘Bible Encounters’ comes into assembly once a term to tell a Bible story in an interesting and interactive way. This term’s was the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector and involved and some interesting props and some optical illusions! Children learnt not to judge things by their first appearence and that everyone should strive to be the best they can be.

Play Safe, Stay Safe Assembly - The junior children learnt the reasons for staying away from construction sites when playing and the dangers that these sites can hold when the construction company working at John Lewis came to visit. Thank you to Christina Underhill for organsing the visit. The children were also invited to take part in a poster competition and the winners are shown below.
