April - Newsletter 19 (28th April 2016)

Dear Parents/Carers,

The PTA Summer Fair - Saturday 21st May, 12-3pm

Please remember to sell your raffle tickets and sign up to help with the fair if you can (there is a reply slip in with your raffle tickets and a sign up board will be in the school entrance from Friday 29th April).

A reminder about our non-uniform days: the children can come to school in their own clothes in exchange for:-

Friday 6th May - Children's tombola prize

Friday 13th May - Any unopened bottle (Sauce, bubble bath, wine etc)

Friday 20th May - Cakes or chocolates. We are hoping to do an afternoon tea so if you are baking, scones, mini cakes or cupcakes would be lovely.

As the non-uniform day on 20th May is during our ‘Best of British’ week the children can wear red, white and blue on this Friday. Either all three colours, two of them or one depending on existing wardrobe choices and fashion preferences – no need to buy anything specially! We will be having a ‘street party’ that afternoon (fingers crossed for good weather) with fun activities for the children to take part in – including sports like cricket and rounders outside. Please can children wear clothes that would be appropriate for that afternoon and bring trainers if they are not wearing them to school that day. All of the children will take part in activities and events over the week (commencing 16th May) which teach them more about our country through our artists, authors, mathematicians, sports people and scientists, our geography and history, our diversity and values and we want to end with a celebration!

British Bunting Competition – Coming home with this newsletter is a template for a bunting flag. We would like the children to design a British themed piece of bunting (it could be a Union Jack, famous Britain, famous landmark etc.). They should decorate one side of the bunting and write their name and class in the appropriate place on the other side. All entries need to be returned by Wednesday 18th May at the latest. We’d like as many entries as possible please so we have a superb string of bunting for our Friday street party and the fair on Saturday. Children can enter more than once – spare flag templates are with Mrs Titterington in the office. The competition will be judged at the fair by the Mayor of Stockport and there will be prizes for the winners.

The Great Lane End Bake Off! – Cake Competition for parents/adults - design and bake a cake no bigger than 10" square with a Best of British theme, these can be brought down on the day of the fair. Judged by the Mayor of Stockport with prizes for our winners.

Fancy Dress Competition – children can come to the fair in fancy dress and enter our competition. The Lord Mayor will judge and there will be prizes for the best infants and juniors.

The junior children will be going out for their first Forest School session on the following days:

Monday 9th May  - Year 5

Friday 13th May – Year 6

Monday 16th May – Year 3

Monday 23rd May – Year 4

They will talk through safety rules, take part in fun and challenging team building activities and make learning links to their curriculum.

Please provide your child with a named bag with the following items in on the date shown above:

  • Wellies or walking boots
  • A waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers or a spare pair of trousers (jogging trousers would be particularly good if it was dry)
  • A long sleeved t-shirt or pullover (in case it is warm and dry and the waterproof jacket isn’t needed)
  • A sun hat/cap if it is sunny

Thank you for your help – the children are really looking forward to exploring the woods.

We have set up a Twitter account and I have written our first tweet! You can follow us @LEPCheadleHulme. This is another way for us to communicate school news and events and a positive way of engaging with parents and the school community. We are not going to put any photos in which children could be recognised on the account – if people are enjoying looking at the tweets and we think that photos of the children working would be a good addition we will of course do a permission form for parents before proceeding. We will try and tweet a couple of times each week showing you some of the school highlights. Please remember if you have any concerns about school you should always come into school to talk to your child’s class teacher or myself about them not put them onto social media where they can’t be properly addressed.

Year 5 Scarbough Trip – our Year 5 children are having a great time on their residential which primarily focuses on the history curriculum but which also has so many other benefits – team work, character building and developing independence. They have all been doing the school and their parents proud with excellent behaviour and sleeping well! So far they have been to York to visit Dig, a Jorvik Viking Exhibition and The Yorkshire Museum where they took part in two workshops. They have visited Scarborough Castle and walked the many steps up to Whitby Abbey. They also had a great time playing on the beach and taking part in the Scarborough Quiz. The children have a disco on Thursday evening and then it is the Sea Life Centre and home on Friday. After a fun and tiring trip the Year 5 (and accompanying staff) will appreciate the bank holiday weekend – please remember we are not in school on Monday 2nd as it is a bank holiday. Enjoy the break!

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
