June - Newsletter 23 (11th June 2014)

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you enjoyed the half term break – we have an exciting and rewarding half term planned with a lot to look forward to: sports, singing, productions, outside learning and lots of working hard and challenges!

Our first event is the PTA Summer Fair which is this Saturday, 12 – 3pm – we really hope you can all make it. It promises to be a fun family event with lots to do for all. There will be fair ground rides, tombolas, the raffle, face painting, pony rides, bouncy castles, refreshments, things to buy, games to play etc. etc. We’ll also have the result of our design a sports t-shirt competition – so children if you haven’t entered yet please get your entry in this week.

Please could all raffle ticket stubs and money (and any unsold tickets) also be returned this week – thank you very much for your help with this. We have lots of great prizes.

It is our last non-uniform day on Friday – children come in non-uniform in exchange for bringing cakes / chocolate / a gift for a hamper. Thank you for the fantastic children’s tombola and bottle prizes which were sent in before the break. Also if you have any unwanted good quality books, CDs or children’s DVDs to donate which we could sell please bring these in on Friday.

If you are able to come and volunteer we still need more helpers – please sign up on the sheet in the school office. Any time you can give helps to share round the work and make it a successful fair. Thank you very much to everyone who has signed up so far.

Change of date for open evening – we need to change the dates for our open evening to Wednesday 23rd July. It will run from 6 – 8pm as usual.Sorry for any inconvenience and we hope to see you all there.

Sports Days are approaching – Juniors: Monday 23rd June starting at 9:30am Infants: Monday 30th June starting at 9:30am.

You are all invited to watch – please keep your fingers crossed for good weather! We will let you know if we need to cancel due to bad weather – unfortunately sometimes this does need to be done on the morning of the sports day. A letter will come home with more information about sports day nearer the time.

It has been a season of sporting success for Lane End and our run continues –the girls and boys football teams are both representing Stockport in the Greater Manchester School Games Football Finals held at Whalley Range School today. Our girls cricket team won their area heat and is through to the Stockport finals. Good luck all! We had success at tennis before the holidays too with our Year 3 tennis team coming a close third in the Stockport competition.

Finally another great success was winning the Stockport Pole2Pole competition which finished just before the holidays. Thank you and well done to everyone who cycled or scooted to school during the event and a big thank you to Mr Vallance who organised it and the Year 4 children who helped. We did so well for a smaller school and Stephen McVeigh from the school travel service will be coming in to an assembly to present a certificate and some prizes. Woodson’s cycles will also visit school to carry out a Dr Bike session – they will look at all bikes which the children bring in and carry out safety checks and basic maintenance where required. We will let you know the date of this when we have it confirmed.

Sainsburys Vouchers – if you have any more vouchers please bring them in ASAP as the scheme finishes soon for this year. We will use the vouchers to buy playground equipment (balls, tennis raquets, cricket equipment, bouncers etc.) for all of the children to use.

Staff News – congratulations to Miss Preskey who is expecting a baby. She is likely to take her maternity leave just after the October holidays and we will make sure that we have an excellent teacher to cover. Next year’s Year 3 parents will be informed when we have organised this.

Sunny Days– we will hopefully start to see some sunnier weather this half term. Please remember to provide your child with a hat and a bottle of water. Also please apply sun cream before school on sunny days (all day creams are a very good idea). Children can bring in sun cream to apply to themselves (e.g. the Superdrug roll on cream) during the day but we can’t do this for them.
