Expo Chef

On Wednesday 20th January a chef came into school for most of the day to perform the Expo Chef Show. Expo Chef is an interactive cooking show that demonstrates how to make food fun, easy and healthy.

Chef Pete cooked some delicious and healthy meals in front of all of the children. The children really enjoyed the demonstration and learnt a lot about healthy eating - some lucky children had a chance to cook and taste the food too. Chef Pete also spent some time with us at lunchtime talking about healthy food choices - he was very impressed with our healthy school dinners and  enjoyed one himself. Chef Pete was also impressed by how many children brought a healthy packed lunch to school. 

We are sure that his visit will help the children get even more enthusiastic about eating healthily!

At the end of the day, all of the children were given a certificate for taking part and a recipe book which includes lots of great recipes to try at home. You can find one of the recipes below.

Recipe for Homemade Burgers (as cooked at Lane End Primary School by Chef Pete)

Ingredients (Makes 6 burgers)

500g minced beef or lamb

Half a medium sized onion

1 pepper

1 celery stick

2 tablespoons of olive oil

Herbs and spices of your choice (see below for TIP*)

PREP - chop the pepper, celery and onion into very small pieces. Place the meat into a mixing bowl.

COOK - Add the first spoonful of oil to a frying pan and throw the veggies in. Cook (not burn!) until they are soft.

*TIP - Add cajun spice, basil, a small amount of tomato puree, garlic puree or mustard to the vegetables whilst cooking!

Now add the vegetables to the uncooked mince and mix in thoroughly until the meat and vegetables 'stick' together. Mould the mix into 6 little burgers. Add the second tablespoon of olive oil into the frying pan and cook the burgers on both sides.

TIP - You could also oven bake or grill the burgers.

TRY - Place the burger on a wholemeal bun with your favourite salads.
