World Book Day 2016

We celebrated World Book Day in style with a World Record Breaking attempt, Dressing Up and the Great Book Swap!

Before the day itself, all classes took part in ‘The Bumper Book Quiz’- testing the children’s knowledge about children’s literature. This was part of a Guinness World Record Breaking attempt for the world’s biggest book quiz. We will find out if the World Record attempt was successful on 3rd March.

UPDATE: we are one of the 62 schools who are included in the SUCCESSFUL record breaking attempt - so the children are record breakers!

You can have a go at the quiz here (it's quite tricky!): http://www.worldbookday.com/quiz/

Very well done to the children and staff and thank you to Mr Toyne for organising the quiz at Lane End.

The Great Book Swap - many of the children brought in a book from home which they thought someone else would like to read. They were able to exchange this for a token to swap for another book. We looked at some of these in assembly and exchanged them at playtime. Some of the children got straight into reading their new book too.

The children looked fantastic in their costumes and we talked about the different characters and types of books - from classics to comic books and books about animals to books about aliens. The children also received a World Book Day book voucher which can be used to buy one of this year's special £1 World Book Day Books (or to get £1 off the price of another book).

Some children who didn't have a book to swap brought in £2 for a book instead. This is going to the ‘The Book Bus’ charity.

Since 2008 The Book Bus has been working in Zambia bringing the joy of reading to thousands of children. The Book Bus visits local community schools each week to help improve literacy. It visits our partner schools in Kitwe, Zambia. Whilst I was there I was lucky to see a reading session in action – the children loved the opportunity to read such quality books which they just didn’t have access to in school.

If you would like to make a contribution to this worthy cause you can go to their website - http://www.thebookbus.org/ (or send a donation in to school in an envelope and we will donate it for you). We sometimes forget how lucky our children are to have all of the books they do at their disposal – we need to make sure they make the most of their opportunities and get the most out of the books they have; use World Book Day Week to talk to your child about your favourite books, enjoy hearing your child read and enjoy reading some favourite books with them.

The Book Factor – Our Year 4 and 5 class are taking part in ‘The Book Factor’ again this year which was launched on Monday 29th February. We are working with 5 other Stockport schools and Simply Books in Bramhall. The children will read and judge 5 different books and vote for their favourite. They will also put together a presentation which will be shown at the final which is at Stockport Plaza.
